Activity Idea: Mouse-Sized Creations

From the November 2022 Newsletter

In Early Chapter Books Class B we’re reading Stuart Little, and our final project of the term is to create some Stuart-sized items! This is a fun and crafty activity whether you’re in that class or not, so I thought this month I’d share some ideas of mouse-sized items you could make, inspired by Stuart Little…

Make Some Stuart-Sized Creations! Here are a few ideas:

(All illustrations shown below are by Garth Williams and found in the book Stuart Little by E.B. White)

A bed (as seen on pages 2 and 49). Stuart’s is made out of a cigarette box and clothespins, but I am sure there are lots of ways you could do this, and any type of small box should work.

Little ice skates (page 49, and seen next to the bed in the illustration above). Stuart’s brother, George, made them for him out of paper clips but you could also make them out of clay or other materials.

A mini wash basin with water flowing through it (as mentioned on page 14 of Stuart Little). Perhaps you could create this using cleaned caps from bottles of water or other containers, or use straws which could be used as pipes for water.

A sailboat fit for a mouse-sized captain (as we read about in chapter 6)…

or a canoe (as seen in chapters 13 and 14 and illustrations below).

If you didn’t get a chance to do the activity from last Newsletter, you might want to make a model automobile like the one Stuart gets in chapter 11 - just be sure not to crash it!
